Why convert PNG to WebP
WebP supports both lossy compression and transparency, so it can replace PNG for photos, screenshots and graphics with an alpha channel. Every current major browser displays WebP, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.
In our benchmark, converting PNG photos to WebP at 75% quality made them 92.3% smaller (mean PSNR 35.09 dB). UI screenshots shrank by 54.2%, about the same as TinySquish's palette PNG, so for flat graphics either format works well.
Frequently asked questions
Does WebP keep PNG transparency?
Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent areas of your PNG stay transparent after conversion.
Is WebP supported everywhere?
All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP. Some older software and a few upload forms still only accept JPEG or PNG, so keep the originals if you might need them.
Should I use WebP or PNG for screenshots?
Both work well. In our benchmark WebP at 75% and palette PNG at 75% saved a similar amount on UI screenshots, and the PNG kept more detail. Use PNG when you need exact pixels or maximum compatibility.
